  • Kindness Cards for Seniors

    This year marks our 5th Annual Kindness Cards for Seniors campaign!

    Since 2020, community members of all ages have created thoughtful and kind Christmas cards, letters and artwork for seniors and elders living in Tweedsmuir House, Heritage Manor, Carroll Cottage & The Pines. After collecting all of the items, Lakes Literacy has organized them into packages and delivered them in time for Christmas 🎄

    💌 Kindness Cards may be dropped off at Burns Lake Public Library & Bulkley Valley Credit Union from December 2-17, 2024.

    We invite community members of all ages to participate:

    ✨Write a Christmas card, letter, or create a piece of artwork for Seniors/Elders living in Tweedsmuir House, Carroll Cottage, Heritage Manor, or the Pines;

    ✨ Drop off your creations between December 1 and 15 in the decorated collection boxes at either Burns Lake Public Library or Bulkley Valley Credit Union (Lakeview Mall, Burns Lake);

  • StoryWalk®

    StoryWalk®

    In recognition of Truth and Reconciliation Week, a StoryWalk® featuring Shi-shi-etko by Nicola I. Campbell will be featured at Spirit Square park in Burns Lake from September 25-October 2.

    Shi-shi-etko is a young Indigenous girl whose name means “she loves to play in the water.” This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of Shi-shi-etko’s final days before she will travel to residential school.

    It is a gentle and moving story of the loving families, close-knit communities and beautiful lives Indigenous children like Shi-shi-etko were forced to leave behind to attend residential schools. We hope this StoryWalk® provides an opportunity for community members of all backgrounds to reflect on Truth and Reconciliation throughout the week. It will remain installed during the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation event hosted by Burns Lake Native Development Corporation at Spirit Square on September 30 🧡

    As always, we thank our StoryWalk® partners in Burns Lake:

    🧡 Burns Lake Public Library for providing printing and laminating

    🧡 Bulkley Valley Credit Union for their financial support

    🧡 Village of Burns Lake Recreation for welcoming StoryWalks® at Spirit Square
